A Wide Range of Uses

The Empress Effects Tape Delay Pedal offers a wide variety of effects including a tap tempo which is easily operated by the footswitch. The advanced configuration allows you to run with 0,2 or 3 presets which again is operated via the soft touch footswitch. The Empress Tape Delay also employs true bypass, or you can choose to use buffered bypass with trails. Many great features that have to be tried.

Tape Age Modes

The Tape Delay offers three different tape age modes including new, vintage and old. The new mode offers lush, clean repeats, and a full frequency response. The vintage mode provides added wow and flutter giving the rich, full bodied feel of an original vintage tape machine. Finally, the old mode offers a saturated, warm delay, lots of compression and dark, rolled off high end offered up by old tape and worn head.

The Tap Footswitch

The tap footswitch does different things depending on which mode it's in. Whilst in Tap mode, the tap footswitch is used to tap in a tempo. The "d time/ratio" knob can be used to select various ratios of this tempo. When using the preset mode, the tap footswitch is used to toggle through presets. It a great tool for adding more dynamics to your performances, and is ideal for guitarists who like to experiment.

The Empress Tape Delay ships with presets disabled, but can be set to use either 2 or 3 presets, using the advanced configuration settings. To toggle through the presets, you simply press the tap footswitch. The colour of the tap LED indicates the current preset. All changes made to the controls of the Tape Delay will be automatically saved to the current preset. You can lock your presets, to prevent them from being overwritten, by using the advanced configuration. When presets are locked, changes made while the preset is engaged will not be saved. This is particularly a great feature if you are writing music.

Buffered Bypass and True Bypass

The Empress Effects Tape Delay Pedal can operate with both a buffered bypass or true bypass. When the buffered bypass enabled, the input to the delay line is disconnected and the dry signal is set to unity gain. The output of the delay line is still summed with the dry signal however, so the delay repeats will be heard. When using the True bypass, it is completely disconnected from the signal chain using a mechanical relay.

Tweaking the Headroom

The Empress Tape Delay has an internal switch which allows for the adjustment of the input headroom. This switch is accessed by removing the back plate. The pedal ships with the switch in the -6dB position, which allows for an input level of +5.1dBu. If the input to the Tape Delay is especially loud, and there is distortion, you can increase the headroom by moving the switch to the -12dB position. If the input is low, and you'd like to increase the signal-tonoise ratio, you can move the switch to the 0dB position.
