OBNE have gone back to the source. V3 updates their classic Black Fountain Delay for the 2020 guitarist's needs. And no feature brings more to the party than the ingenious expression pedal integration. Holding down the main bypass button lets you set your minimum, or 'heel' values for both the delay time and feedback.
Hold it again and set your maximum, or 'toe' values, click the bypass button to finish, and you can now use your expression pedal to warp and waiver your delay effect to your heart's content. The time values can even be set with the tap tempo and subdivision select options, turning your expression input into a consistent and reliable dual-preset powerhouse.
Oil drum delay - Fluid flexibility
One control on the Black Fountain's surface raises eyebrows like no other - Fluid. To understand what it does, you need to know about the oil drum technology this pedal is modelled on. Developed in the 1950s, oil drum delay units offered an alternative to expensive magnetic tape models, charging and discharging the oil itself inside the drum to create the repeats.
This imperfect system, combined with the swirling motion of the liquid oil, created the super-analogue, vibrato-infused timbre the Black Fountain delivers. Turn the fluid knob fully clockwise to max out the modulation
Modes, mods and moods
Choose your weapon. The Black Fountain V3 features three distinct voices. The subtle and solid Modern setting gives an easy-to-set starting point, while Vintage pushes the pedal's signature warmth and modulation to the fore.
However, Organ mode is the real creative curveball, setting your delay time to a fixed 211ms - a classic slapback. Meanwhile the time, fluid, and feedback controls switch roles to control the frequency, depth and repeats of the pedal's modulation, rather than the echoes themselves. With so many sonic selections, you can dial in your dream dark delay in a flash.
