The Empirical Labs DerrEsser is a 500-series module designed for high frequency mixing and de-essing applications. The DS mode is perfect for treating sibilants and over harsh transient spikes. This can be highly useful for vocals, resulting in a clearer and more concise sound. The result is improved clarity with an aggressive sound dependent on your settings. The threshold in DS mode isn’t dependent on level, instead it compares the high frequency content to the low frequency contact, providing a more balanced overall level. The unit utilises cutting-edge VCA technology designed for maximum stability for glitch, noise and distortion free performance. The corner frequency in this mode is adjustable with a high performance active crossover.
The HF Limiter acts as a high frequency compressor. The HF Limiter mode works by measuring the high frequency content, and if its exceeds the threshold, gain reduction the occurs. The HF Limiter is level sensitive, responding much more to high frequencies for more aggressive sound shaping. It is ideal for high frequency smooth, acting as a soft-knee HF limiter that delivers a musical yet warm sound.
Highpass mode uses the ‘Listen’ function to process your audio. The advanced circuitry helps to deliver high-end sound reproduction, resulting in pristine audio fidelity. Once you have pushed the ‘Listen’ button in and the HP/LP switch out, you will hear the high frequencies which are controlled via the dynamic/compression circuits. The corner frequency is also adjustable via the Frequency knob.
The Lowpass mode allows you to hear the low frequencies when not affected by the compression circuits or the VCA. The 12dB.octave filter features an adjustable corner frequency, which can be used to change the shape of your sound. With the Listen button and HP/LP button activated the Lowpass mode will be triggered, providing the low-end content with exceptional clarity.
