Key Features
The Yamaha YFL-817 Professional Handmade Flute is suited to advanced flautists seeking refined tonal control, reliable response, and orchestral-level projection. Handmade in Japan, this sterling silver flute combines soldered undercut toneholes with Yamaha’s Type A headjoint to produce a resonant, colourful sound with strong projection and a wide dynamic range. The slightly thicker tonehole construction also helps improve resonance, giving your playing greater depth and tonal flexibility across delicate pianissimo passages and more powerful orchestral dynamics.
Straubinger Phoenix pads are a key feature of the YFL-817, providing stable seating, clear response, and longer-lasting adjustment stability compared to traditional felt and paper pads. Combined with flattened pad cups, the mechanism remains more consistent over time while supporting a freer resonance throughout the instrument. The covered keys and Offset G system provide a comfortable, natural feel under the hands, while the Split E mechanism improves the stability and intonation of high E notes. Finished with a C footjoint for a warmer, flexible tone, the YFL-817 also includes an FLC-87CL hard case and FLB-65II gig bag.

Yamaha developed the Type A headjoint to give players a more colourful and flexible sound without sacrificing ease of response. Its slightly increased wall thickness improves resonance throughout the headjoint, helping produce a tone with greater depth and projection across the full dynamic range. This allows you to move naturally between delicate pianissimo passages and more resonant fortissimo playing while maintaining clarity and focus. Many flautists also appreciate the headjoint’s balanced resistance, which helps support more controlled phrasing and articulation in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings.
The YFL-817 features Straubinger Phoenix pads, widely regarded as an important component in professional handmade flute design. Built using a stable plastic base and durable synthetic leather, these pads are more resistant to environmental changes than traditional felt and paper pads, helping the flute stay in adjustment for longer periods. This can reduce the need for frequent maintenance while providing a more consistent playing feel over time. Combined with Yamaha’s flattened pad cup design, the pads respond more freely and evenly, contributing to clearer articulation, improved resonance, and a more mature tonal character throughout the instrument.
Soldered toneholes with hand-undercut inner edges help give the YFL-817 its lively, resonant sound and broad tonal palette. Yamaha also slightly increased the thickness of the toneholes to improve overall resonance and stability, allowing the instrument to project clearly while maintaining subtle tonal detail. This specialised undercut design works specifically with soldered toneholes to create a balanced response across all registers. Additionally, Yamaha’s acoustic annealing process helps improve vibration transfer throughout the flute, contributing to a deeper, more refined sound with a clear and responsive feel under the fingers.
The YFL-817 combines professional-level craftsmanship with a practical key configuration designed for comfort and consistency. Covered keys help create a secure seal even if finger placement is slightly off-centre, while the Offset G system provides a more natural hand position that many players find easier during extended rehearsals and performances. The Split E mechanism improves the response and intonation of high E, helping notes speak more cleanly in demanding passages. With a C footjoint for a slightly warmer tonal character and flexible response, the flute also includes a compact FLC-87CL hard case and FLB-65II gig bag for secure transport and storage.
