The Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue is built using the same meticulous methods as the originals from Gibson’s golden era. This includes a long tenon neck joint and hide glue construction, which contribute to enhanced resonance and sustain. The body is made from a single piece of lightweight mahogany, topped with a two-piece plain maple cap, just like the originals from 1958. While later models introduced more figured maple tops, the plain maple used here gives it a historically accurate, understated aesthetic that lets the craftsmanship speak for itself. Combined with the Royalite binding and period-correct joint work, this guitar feels every bit like a vintage original straight from 1958.
This reissue has been treated with the Murphy Lab’s Light Aged finish, a process designed to emulate decades of natural wear without going overboard. Light checking in the nitrocellulose lacquer, subtly aged hardware, and gently dulled plastics contribute to an incredibly convincing vintage appearance. Unlike heavy relic work, the Light Aging offers a tasteful blend of playwear and patina that adds personality and history to the instrument without feeling overly distressed. It gives you the feel of a well-played guitar that has aged gracefully through years of gigs and sessions.
